Are we any better off than medieval peasants? The writer of this blog post doesn't think so. I'm inclined to agree, given the arguments presented.

he paints the life of a peasant a little rosier than it actually was, but not terribly so. i've never run the numbers, but it is possible that we have to work longer to pay for the same relative amenities. furthermore, peasants and serfs had one thing we don't: guaranteed work if they wanted it.

*nod* It did strike me as possibly rosier than reality, but yep -- guaranteed jobs for everyone!

The medieval peasant also had an enormous number of holidays ( seem to recall it being near a hundred).

Apples, Oranges...
I'm always highly suspicious when people tell me how great it was in the days of kings, queens, enforced agricultural labor, and (church-approved) celebrations. You really have to be a "looking on the bright side of life" kinda person to appreciate the "benefits" of a feudal system.

There is no such thing as a completely flawed system in the same way there is no such thing as a perfect system. Or to put it another way, "It is an ill wind which blows nobody any good."

Re: Apples, Oranges...
The English feudal system wasn't "completely flawed", but I'd take the benefits and flaws of our modern society over theirs any day.

Oh definitely. I thought it was an amusing article. That said, I'd have never survived to my first birthday in a world like that.

Uh...I dunno. I'm a big fan of being able to go to the next town when I feel like it.

You know, I was buying some groceries when it finally struck me exactly what I find wrong in that article. Even if its rosy picture of the life of a serf is true, it seems to presume that because liberal freedoms are not themselves tied to your material standard of living, that they are irrelevant to the comparison.

Yes. There are so many flaws in the comparison, but still, fun thought experiment.

That's funny, I was just thinking about this.
