Flame shift

Tonight is my shift for keeping the flame. I'm experimenting with some different ways of dealing with keeping a flame going for 24 hours or so. The floating wicks I've been using haven't been working so well lately and I can't imagine what's changed. They used to be able to go for some days without a problem, now I can barely keep them going for a full shift. I'm thinking one of those twisted wires around a bit of wicking that can go into the cauldron, but that will mean I have to find some heavy bare wire to use. Nothing I have in the house is suitable.

Today I got my tickets for the Steampunk Exhibition Ball at Seattle's Museum of History and Industry. I'm linking to the FAQ page because the main page on the website is giving me a 404. Folks were talking it up at SteamCon and it sounded like a lot of fun. Music, dancing, and a host of other exciting goings-on are to be expected. The ball will be December 5th.

Tomorrow is a new local Steampunk event, the Movable Tea. Somebody suggested getting together for tea, but not at a fixed location, so folks will be hosting in various places. The first one is in Kenmore and should be fun. I have to remember to pick up some truffles for my contribution.

Laundry is going, dinner is in the oven, and I'm feeling a need to curl up and read.

I'm intrigued by Steampunk fashion and art but I don't really know much about the "culture." I put it in quotations because I don't even know if there is a culture about it... What does one do in a Steampunk event besides dress up and discuss/exhibit Steampunk art and literature?
There are bands that are considered "steampunk" as well. Most of the culture at the moment revolves around fashion, music, art, and literature. At the local Steam Vent gatherings, folks get together to socialize but they also come to work on or show off their current projects, whether clothing, sculpture, or jewelry. At an event like the one I'm going to, there will be music, dancing, food, and hanging out in a steampunk atmosphere. One could ask the same things about the goth subculture that one could about steampunk -- they have some similar sensibilities.
I see. Is there a sense of roll play involved? The most active involvement I've had with anything steampunk has been a steampunk D&D campaign.

Thanks for your explanations. :)
Some people do create a persona to go with their steamy clothes but many do not. And some people do LARPs with steampunk storylines. It really depends on what end of the community you come in on. In a way it's at least partly an esoteric science fiction fandom, as Verne and Wells are often popular with steampunks.
I've had good luck with long-burning flames using glass oil candles (from firelight glass, they have some that can hold rather a lot of oil) placed in a larger bowl of water & rocks for safety purposes.

find some heavy bare wire
Do you have metal clothes hangers? Cut a length of one and wrap it around another? That should get you the metal-spiral to hold a wick that I think you're looking for, be strong enough and fireproof.
Very cool on both counts -- thank you for the suggestions! I ordered a couple of 3-inch replacement wicks in tubes from the site and will use one of my metal hangers to create a spiral for it to rest on in my cauldron. I'm betting that will work famously!
I also used to use the Firelight Glass oil lamps, and it worked well. Just to throw in another recommendation. :)
