Busy yet not

Eggplant
Yesterday was mostly quiet, though I did go out to the AFK. I did more planning for the east coast trip both last night and today, and I also made my reservation with the Ashland Hostel for my trip down to PCon in February.

Sadly, Ruby Sara isn't in Chicago anymore, as she's moved back down to Texas. This, however, means I can take toll-free roads around Chicago rather than driving through. I will have an opportunity to visit with the awesome storyfan in KZoo, though, which I'm very much looking forward to. We've been writing in the same fandoms off and on for some years now. I put in a note to Owen in Providence about visiting the NECTW folks there on my way from Plymouth down to NYC.

I have a few folks to visit in NYC, one of whom will be out here later this month. I need to start making a list of places I intend to visit while I'm on the road.

While I was in Europe, I was defeated by my camera's continuous shot setting and finally, today, got it figured out. It's not nearly as fast as my previous camera, but it will do. I missed a fair bit of stuff that I would have liked to get while I was overseas because I couldn't figure out how to turn on the multiple shots function. At least now I will be able to do a little better. It does make a huge difference, given how much my hands shake. I really rely on that setting to compensate for the muscle tremors.

Today I've been having more of the "left eyeball feels splodey" headache. It's not quite bad enough to be disabling and I suspect that it had to do with the snow that came today. It only just now got down to 32f, but it had been raining/snowing much of the day. The streets and the parking lot are clear, but the cars and the grass do still have a little snow on them. I'm sure it will be gone by tomorrow, unless we get more tonight.

Tomorrow is the first of our 10-week VA group sessions in the new year. They know I will be gone for a couple of weeks in February, as I always am, but I wouldn't want to miss tomorrow's session due to either a migraine or snow. Either would be horribly annoying.

I spent a little of today giving thought to compiling my list of Irish deities/heroes who have some association with healing. I haven't actually set pen to paper yet, but have been dredging through my memory banks to get a few listed, along with the context. The headache, though, has made most things a little more laborious than they really ought to be. Staying focused is hard.

I am actually right off 1-95 in CT, and may be on your route, so if you need a pit stop or to crash, just let me know! We had actually had a bit of correspondence way back in the 90s via snail mail and I bought some of your publications so we do kind of know each other, LOL.

I'll be going from Plymouth to Providence to NYC so I will be somewhere in the vicinity. I'm sure we can work something out. There are a few people in CT who I'd like to see, so perhaps we can work out some location where everyone can get together for lunch or something.

If you're near Ann Arbor, and would like to grab a coffee and a bit of a chat, let me know!

erynn999, you should TOTALLY do that! celtic_elk is, according to the Triads of Alfrecht one of the "Three Best Things in Ann Arbor" (the other two being Hatcher Graduate Library and the Kelsey Museum of Art and Archaeology...though some other traditions say Vault of Midnight, but in any case...!?!). If you are in K'zoo, it's only a few hours from there further east...!

I am certain there will be time for such a thing.

Question: I know you have Finn on your list of deities for that, but do you have the Hound of Ulster as well? There's a case to be made for that in a variety of ways, at least in terms of how he is portrayed in the literature...

The only bit I remember with him healing someone was when he was healing the Morrígan, but I sort of saw that as him removing a curse he'd put on her? I'll have to re-read that bit. I'd love to hear your various cases because it would be cool to put him on the list.

It's not really removing a curse; it was that the Hound* was said to have had the ability of being the only one who could heal the wounds he inflicted.

But, I'm trying to remember now...there are a few other occasions in which he is said to have had great knowledge of healing herbs and such--I know in the course of his fight with Fer Diad, in the aftermath for the first few nights, they each partake of one another's company, and they share healing herbs between them.

This is a feature that then gets picked up in the British character based on the Hound: Sir Gawain, who in a few texts is ascribed a similar property, but he's also said in Li Conte del Graal to have been a master of healing herbs.

Do you have a DIAS version of TBC? It is in there...in any case, perhaps just a mention would be all you'd need to say, anyway. And, given that the Hound--no matter the circumstances--is the only person who could heal The Great/Phantom Queen of her wounds, that's at least some precedent for thinking of him as a healing divine figure for people now (perhaps even for warriors and veterans especially?), even if he wasn't in the past.

*: I'm calling him that because I can't do the proper diacritics on this keyboard...!

I printed out your note here. I don't have any DIAS version of TBC, sadly, but I have definitely added your notes to my own. There is certainly precedent for figures gaining and losing attributes as time passes. I'm pretty sure that the versions of the Táin I do have do mention the fight with Fer Diad and the healing work they undertook each night during the course of that battle.
