VICTORY FOR ZIM! or, Erynn: 1, VA: 0

OBEY THE FIST!
Before I headed out to the VA today, I typed up a quick letter to deliver to the Patient Advocates office about the "educational" poster mentioned a couple of days ago. I didn't have much time, so I just dropped it off rather than staying to talk to them. I had to get up to my appointment, and the office would be closed by the time I was done. I did include my phone number and email address, so with any luck they will get back to me.

When I got up to the WTRC, though, the poster was gone! Denise had talked to Wendy. She didn't even get through the whole discussion -- she just described the poster (Wendy is blind so would never have seen it) and Wendy said she totally understood the objections, et voila, the poster she is removed. Now, with any luck, if there are further copies in other clinics, the advocate's office will be able to take care of that.

Several of the other women in the group today had heard me talking to the chaplain intern last week and they said they'd not felt comfortable with the poster either, so I got a lot of props for taking on the system and getting the thing removed.

good for you on the Wictory!

I used to carry a sharpie with me most days up there just to correct spelling and grammar errors.. not sure what I would have done to an entire poster.

It was behind glass in a locked case.

*damn* but then again, I am a tool user, I could eventually get the case open, but by then, the closed circuit tv would have ratted me out.

Yep, that's about the size of it.

Well, result! Glad to hear it!

Also, just for my own poor mind's sake: am I missing a Monty Python segue into the photos here? They're lovely, and obviously from your trip last summer, but did you take them, or are they from your brother, etc.? "And now, a few photos from Venice." ;)

There was supposed to be an LJ cut there somewhere. I'll check the code again. Yeah, I took the photos when I was in Venice.

Congrats on the poster victory.

A coworker and I were talking about my lack of hesitancy to speak up/write letters of complaint or advocacy, and how hard that is for those in certain communities. He wondered whether my ease in doing so implied a sense of entitlement. I told him that I don't think so. Rather I see it as an obligation to do something others might want to do but can't for one reason or another.

Off that topic, I love the photos.

Entitlement???? Please. Smack him with a shovel. I'm with you on the doing things that others can't.

Thanks for the props on the photos. I'm pretty proud of some of the ones I managed to take.

The shovel was my first reaction, too. But we're good friends so I realized it wasn't meant as an insult, more him sorting his thoughts out. He grew up in an immigrant community where no one expected their complaints to be heard or to garner anything other than trouble. Lately he's started writing letters when things are out of whack and has been shocked at the positive responses that he's gotten from agencies/companies. The odd thing is that he's former military and has no trouble advocating for himself or others within the VA system.

Oh, yeah, that does seem a little odd, but I suppose that standing up for yourself is easier in some contexts than others. Doesn't he realize that actually saying something is the only way to get a bad situation fixed? It's true that, yes, it can certainly bring trouble for the person who complains, but we have to keep doing it even when trouble happens, or nothing ever gets done.

He's well aware that standing up makes at difference in terms of group actions and advocacy. He just wasn't taught to do it as an individual. I appreciated the glimpse into such a different experience.

Yeah, that really would make a difference.
